He beat Nigel Mansell more often than not, and was third in 'that' 1984 season. The following year, he wasn't too far off Senna. But a crash in testing at Paul Ricard in 1986 ended what could have been. After which, the FIA took measures to slow the cars down, and made sure that no matter whether it was a race weekend or a test session, both will be held to the same high standards of safety. No helicopter? No test. No Watkins? No FIA held session. So who was De Angelis? And why was this accident more than just one of those things that occasionally happened while testing?
